Why "Split/Gender"?

When I originally created this blog I was deeply interested in gender and Judith Butler. I still create work which relates back to this theme, but  I have made it a little less obvious. "Hysteria" actually refers back to this older work. The piece "Miracle" relates to those who were born without a uterus, and "Snipped" relates to those who got hysterectomy. "Miracle" can be someone who was born intersex and "Snipped" may be someone who is in the process of getting SRS (Sexual Reassignment Surgery).
Although both are only part of this whole theme. There is a lot of information out there that can help people understand those out there that we disregard. I highly recommend Judith Butler as a scholarly commenter on Gender. As for everything else ( Intersex, Transexual, Genderqueer, Transgender etc) information is easily accessible online, some sources are not proper representations of anyone.  Below is a few books that are much better if you can get access to them:

  • True Selves: Understanding Transsexualism...: For Family, Friends, Coworkers, and Helping Professionals
  • Whipping Girl: A Transexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity
  • Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, And the Rest of Us
  • The Riddle of Gender
